Akita Kanto Festival was developed from an event where people wash away their evil spirits during mid summer which took place around the time of Horeki (1751-1764).
Kanto Matsuri is known as Akita's customs from long time ago, and was known as "Neburi Nagashi", where people write wishes on a strip of paper, hang them on a bamboo pole, walk around the town with it and at the end they let it float away on a river. Today they hang lamps instead of papers with wishes, which makes it look like an ear of rice.
Their main part is the festival at night, which starts from around 6:15 pm. Their performance is what you really have to see!

How to enjoy Akita Kanto Festival

Their performances are exciting and unique! They support the bamboo pole that weighs about maximum 50kg by their back, shoulders and sometimes chin. They call out "Dokkoisho Dokkoisho" and their move has a sense of unity, which makes their performance even more artsy!

Yatai (food stalls) have lots of delicious food options! They have yatai at two places and they also have Gotouchi Gourmet Festival where you can try Akita's delicious cuisines!
If you want to have a relaxing experience with the best view at Akita Kanto Festival, it is recommended to purchase a ticket to save a seat! You can make reservation by contacting their office, but it might run out really quick due to its popularity.
