2019 Guide to Fireworks Festivals in Japan! (花火大会)

Fireworks are extremely popular in Japan. Most people say that fireworks here are better than anywhere else in the world! Summer is fireworks season, and millions of people throughout the country go to watch fireworks with their friends and family. If you are in Japan this summer, definitely put one of these festivals on your itinerary!

You will probably be surprised to know that many fireworks festivals in Japan last several hours (yes, several hours of continuous fireworks)! So bring some food, drinks, and a tarp and get ready to experience a fireworks show like you've never seen before! Here's a list of some of the best fireworks festivals (hanabi taikai) happening in Japan this summer!

Omagari Fireworks (Akita)

The fireworks festival held at Omagari in Akita Prefecture is recognized as one of the major fireworks festivals in Japan! The event is a fireworks competition where spectators get to watch different kinds of amazing fireworks all at once! They hold two fireworks shows on the day of the event: Day time fireworks and nighttime fireworks. Although the start time is in the evening, getting there as early as possible is strongly recommended.

Location: Omagari, Daisen, Akita
Access: Around a 30-minute walk from JR Omagari station

Nagaoka Matsuri Fireworks Festival (Niigata)

Nagaoka Matsuri Fireworks Festival is another major fireworks festival that is held in Nagaoka, Niigata Prefecture. This is fairly old fireworks festivals in Japan, that was restarted after World War II. Check out their unique "Phoenix" fireworks that celebrate the revival of the festival!

Date: August 2nd and 3rd, 2018
Time: 7:20-9:10 pm
Location: the river bed of Shinanogawa, Nagaoka, Niigata
Access: Around a 30-minute walk from JR Nagaoka station.

Tsuchiura All Japan Fireworks Festival (Ibaraki)

This is another huge fireworks festival in Tsuchiura, Ibaraki Prefecture (East of Tokyo). There will be around 20,000 fireworks launched, and the show is scheduled to last about 2 and a half hours. It's the second most popular fireworks competition in Japan, and there's typically a crowd of about 750,000 spectators, so it's a good idea to arrive early and plan ahead!

Time: 6:00 pm- 8:30pm
Location: Sakuragawa Shore Park
Access: A 10 minute ride by shuttle bus from JR Tsuchiura station, or a 30 minute walk from JR Tsuchiura station.

Sumidagawa Fireworks Festival (Tokyo)

This festival is located in Taito-ku, Tokyo. The Sumidagawa is the river that you can see from Asakusa, so it's right in the middle of Tokyo! There are two different venues to watch the beautiful show from, each with a different program, so check out both if you can! It's a special show that gives you a view of the Tokyo Skytree next to huge fireworks!

Time: 7:00-8:30 pm
Location: Sumida River
Access: venue 1 - a 15 minute walk from Asakusa station, venue 2 - a 5 minute walk from Asakusa station (Just follow the crowds!)

Edogawa Fireworks Festival (Tokyo)

In August, Tokyo's Edogawa river becomes the spot of a fantastic fireworks display. This year, more than 10,000 fireworks will be shot into the sky! The best spot to watch the fireworks from is Shinozaki Ryokuchi or Shinozaki Park, where if you are lucky, you can sit and enjoy the beautiful fireworks from very close. Since it is such a popular festival, be there early to save your spot!

Access: a 15 minute walk from Shinozaki station, a 25 minute walk from Koiwa station, a 25 minute walk from Keisei-Edogawa station

Katsushika Noryo Fireworks Festival (Tokyo)

One of the most popular fireworks festivals not only in Tokyo but in the Kanto area is the Katsushika Noryo Fireworks Festival, which is happening on July 23rd, 2019. The event is scheduled to include some 13,000 fireworks!! With Katsushika's historic and somewhat nostalgic atmosphere, this is a great festival to choose. In the case of rain, the event will be held on the following day instead.

Naniwa Yodogawa Fireworks Festival (Osaka)

Wondering where to go watch fireworks in Osaka? You should definitely check out Yodogawa Fireworks Festival! Its dynamic fireworks are overwhelming and it is recognized as one of Osaka's most iconic summer events. This festival is held on the Yodogawa, a well-known river in Osaka. The reflection of fireworks on the river is astonishingly beautiful!

Time: 7:40-8:40 pm
Location: downstream from Shin Mido-suji Yodogawa Tetsubashi to the Yodogawa riverbed of Japan National route #2
Access: Around a 25 minute walk from Umeda station, a 15 minute walk from Juso station. (follow the crowds!)

PL Art of Fireworks (Osaka)

This festival is another really famous and unique fireworks festival in Osaka. It is hosted by a religious organization, and the purpose is to pray for world peace by displaying vibrant fireworks! It is held on the first of August every year when they set off fireworks around 10,000 fireworks. The fireworks are really like works of art, and are more creative than other fireworks shows! Be sure to get there as early as possible!

Time: 8:00-8:30pm
Location: Tondabayashi, Osaka-fu
Access: About 15 minutes from Tondabayashi Station

Tenjin Matsuri (Osaka)

Tenjin Matsuri is one of the biggest summer festivals in Japan. On the last day, at the very end of festival, the fireworks are displayed. It is the biggest event that closes Tenjin Matsuri, and you get to enjoy their original fireworks called "Beni Ume." The names of the companies that sponsored Tenjin Matsuri also appear in the form of fireworks in the sky, which is very unique! Tenjin Matsuri is a lot of fun, so if you are in Osaka you should definitely check it out!
