2018 Guide to Fireworks Festivals in Japan!

Fireworks are really huge in Japan, especially during summer. It is one of the seasonal events, and people go watch fireworks with their friends and family. If you are in Japan during summer, visit the following fireworks festivals!

Omagari Fireworks (Akita)

Fireworks festival held at Omagari is recognized as one of the major fireworks festivals in Japan! It is enjoyed as fireworks competition where you get to watch different kinds of amazing fireworks at once! They will be holding two fireworks during the day: Day time fireworks and night time fireworks. Although its start time is in the evening, getting there as early as possible is strongly recommended.

Access: Around a 30 minute walk from JR Omagari station

Nagaoka Matsuri Fireworks Festival (Niigata)

Nagaoka Matsuri Fireworks Festival is one of the major fireworks festivals in Japan, next to Omagari Fireworks. This is one of the traditional fireworks festivals in Japan, and this year they are celebrating their 70th year since firework festival was restarted after the WWII. Don't miss out their "Phoenix" fireworks and other popular fireworks that will celebrate the revival of the festival!

Location: the river bed of Shinanogawa, Nagaoka, Niigata
Access: Around a 30-minute walk from JR Nagaoka station.

Tsuchiura All Japan Fireworks Festival (Ibaraki)

This is another major fireworks festival in Japan, next to Omagari Fireworks and Nagaoka Matsuri Fireworks Festival. Tsuchiura All Japan Fireworks Festival is a festival where competition is held, which means you get to watch so many of unique and original fireworks! This festival is very popular and a countless number of people would come watch their spectacular fireworks, so make sure to be there as early as possible!

Location: Sakuragawa Shore Park
Access: A 10 minute ride by shuttle bus from JR Tsuchiura station, or a 30 minute walk from JR Tsuchiura station.

Sumidagawa Fireworks Festival (Tokyo)

Located in Taito-ku, Sumidagawa is a river that you can see from Asakusa. On July 29th, 2017, their beautiful art will be set off to the sky. Held at two different venues, and have two different programs so check out both! If you are lucky, you might be able to get a view of Tokyo's new landmark, Tokyo Sky Tree and delightful fireworks!

Access: venue 1 - a 15 minute walk from Asakusa station, venue 2 - a 5 minute walk from Asakusa station

Edogawa Fireworks Festival (Tokyo)

On August 5th, one of the popular and greatest fireworks festivals will be held at Edogawa. 10,000 fireworks will be displayed in the sky! Recommended spot to watch fireworks is Shinozaki Ryokuchi or Shinozaki Park where if you are lucky, you can sit and enjoy the beautiful fireworks really close. Since it is such a popular festival, be there early to save your spot!

Katsushika Noryo Fireworks Festival (Tokyo)

One of the most popular fireworks festival not only in Tokyo but in the Kanto area, eastern part of Japan, is Katsushika Fireworks, which is happening on July 25th, 2017. With Katsushika's historic and somewhat nostalgic atmosphere, you can enjoy breathtaking fireworks!

Naniwa Yodogawa Fireworks Festival (Osaka)

Wondering where to go watch fireworks in Osaka? You should definitely check out Yodogawa Fireworks Festival! Is dynamic fireworks are really popular among all ages, and it is recognized as one of the events that represents Osaka's summer. This festival is held at Yodogawa, a well-known river in Osaka. The reflection of fireworks on Yodogawa river is astonishingly beautiful!

PL Art of Fireworks (Osaka)

This festival is another really famous and popular fireworks festival in Japan. They aim to pray for world's peace by displaying vibrant fireworks! It is held on the first of August every year, and they set off large number of fireworks. It is said that whenever PL fireworks festival happens the sky becomes really bright. Be sure to get there early as possible! Enjoy dazzling art of lights in the sky!

Access: Around a 10 minute walk from Tondabayashi station

Tenjin Matsuri (Osaka)

Tenjin Matsuri is one of the biggest summer festivals in Japan. On the last day, at the very end of festival, the fireworks are displayed. It is the biggest even that closes Tenjin Matsuri, and you get to enjoy their original fireworks called "Beni Ume" and also the names of the companies that sponsored Tenjin Matsuri appear in the form of fireworks in the sky. Tenjin Matsuri is also really fun, so if you are in Osaka you should definitely check it out!
