During Tokugawa era, Sanno Matsuri was called "Tenka Matsuri", and the Shogun attended to watch the festival. Ever since then it is known as one of the famous and traditional festivals in Japan, which is now considered as one of the three major festivals in Japan and Tokyo. It is hosted by Hie Shrine located in Akasaka, Tokyo.

Main Events

The festival is generally held for about 10 days, and these are the main events that you don't want to miss!
Shinkosai is one of the main events during the festival. It is where people parade the center of Tokyo carrying Mikoshi. The next Shinkosai will take place in 2020. You can watch the parade from various locations in Tokyo: Kokkai Gijido (the Diet Building), Tokyo station, Ginza Chuo-dori, Teikoku Hotel, Hie Shrine, and more! It is also the only festival that parades Tokyo Imperial Palace and Former Edo Castle.
There will be a performance called "Bon-Odori" at Noryo Taikai, where there will be lots of food stalls and booths where you can eat, play games and dance! There will be traditional Japanese music and Taiko performances, which adds dynamics to its festive atmosphere.
This year they even had a haunted house! In Japan, horror story telling is considered as one of the summerly things to do, because it cools you down when you shudder, and due to the O-bon culture, where people commemorate the spirits of one's ancestors.

Food

Of course it's a summer festival, they have lots of food stalls! From savory food like yakisoba to desserts like cotton candy and choco banana, you can enjoy a variety of street food and festival-exclusive food!
