Done properly, fugu makes some of the most exquisite and refined dishes such as this sashimi plate! A dish of fugu typically costs between ¥2000 and ¥5000. They are often served as part of a course meal in high-end restaurants. If you dare (and you should!), here are some places to try some of the best fugu in Osaka!

Zuboraya Dotonbori Store

This restaurant located on the famous Dotonbori Street in Osaka is difficult to miss, as there is a huge fugu display hanging on the top of the restaurant. It takes about a 5 minute walk from the Namba Station to get there. This place is huge (has 350 seats) and is reliably good! It is one of the best known fugu-specializing restaurants in the city. There are various gorgeous sets with fugu as the center piece. Prices for these sets start from around ¥5000. You can also order fugu dishes a la carte. The popular boiled fugu dish is ¥2650, a very reasonable price for fugu.

Takoyasu

Takoyasu is located at a 5-minute walk from the Asashiobashi Station, in a charming building that resembles an old traditional house. It has a comfortable dining space with tatami seats. Takoyasu focuses on serving dishes of the highest quality. It is quite possibly the best restaurant for fugu in Osaka. Here, you can have a reservation-only course for the price of ¥20,000. Expensive indeed but the quality you get is in a class of its own. In this course, you get both the fugu in sashimi and in slices for hotpot. The fish is as fresh as it can be and the presentation is described as a masterpiece.

Fukunoya

Fukunoya is located at a 4 minute walk from the Kitashinchi Station. This traditional Japanese restaurant specializes in eel dishes as well. You can order various dishes a la carte and choose from two fugu courses. Note that the fugu is only available in season from September to April. One course has farm-raised fugu and is ¥14,000, while the other has wild fugu and is ¥22,000.

Tatemoto

Tatemoto is another restaurant renowned for its fine quality. It has received rave review from many gourmet websites. It is located at a 3-minute walk from the Tengachaya Station. Tatemoto serves luxurious set courses that include fugu from ¥13,000 to ¥17,000. You can also order fugu dishes a la carte. The fugu sashimi plate, for instance, is a reasonable ¥3,500, the broiled fugu dish is ¥3,000 and the fugu nabe (pot) is ¥8,000. A bit pricey, but the quality is a certainty at this address!

Fuguyoshi Ikeda Store

Fukuyoshi Ikeda Store is located at a 10-minute walk from the Ishibashi Station. Although a little outside of the city's core, this store has a beautiful Japanese-style interior and offers fugu lunch courses (hotpot or grilled) at very reasonable prices (¥2,670 to ¥4,810). You can order a la carte fugu only from the dinner hours. Prices are also reasonable then. You can get the popular plate of fugu shabushabu for ¥3,130.

Lastly...

Fugu is one of those rare Japanese foods you have got to try at least once! If you are in Osaka why not have it at one of these five selected shops? You may even really like it and become a regular customer!
