A Restaurant Guide Around The Kinkakuji Temple, Kyoto

Kinkakuji Temple

Kinkakuji, also known as the Golden Pavilion has a formal name of Rokuonji. Although it was originally built as a villa for the shogun Ashikaga Yoshimitsu, the building was converted to a Zen Buddhist temple. Many people visit this temple from its unique, shiny design, and is a historical building that represents Japan.

Kyoto Gontaro

There are three stores of Gontaro located in Kyoto, and one of them is the Kinkakuji store. It is on the road that leads to Kinkakuji temple. A Japanese, the Kyoto-style designed store has table seats and tatami seating in the first floor, and private rooms on the second floor.

They have soba and udon noodles, tempura, rice bowls and many other Japanese cuisines! They also have an English menu and are very welcoming of tourists.

Kinkaku

Kinkaku is located 3 minutes away from the Kinkakuji temple. This restaurant is only open during lunch time, but is popular for the Kyoto cuisine buffet! You can enjoy over 30 different Kyoto-style dishes such as Kyoto tofu for ¥1,800! Other than buffet, they also have bento lunches and lunch plates.

English and Chinese speaking staff work at this restaurant. For a healthy, Japanese lunch, Kinkaku may be a good choice!

Kinugasa Zen

You can find this udon noodle restaurant from the parking lot of Kinkakuji temple. They have over 20 different udon noodles on the menu with different toppings and you can also choose if you want it hot or cold. They have tempura and other bowls on the menu!

Wara

This restaurant is located 7 minutes away from the Kinkakuji temple, and they mainly serve Kyoto tofu. It is a restaurant with a very small and homely atmosphere, but as there are only 16 seats in total, making reservations in advance is highly recommended!
