For a Very Japanese Experience, You Must Visit Sagano Bamboo Forest!

The Bamboo forest is located in Arashiyama (嵐山), in the outskirts of Kyoto. It is a very popular touristic destination because of its incredible and unique Japanese beauty. If you are in Kyoto, this is a must-go to destination.

Sagano Bamboo Forest

The Sagano bamboo forest in Arashiyama is a wonderful destination to go to while travelling through Kyoto. There are many other beautiful attractions nearby, such as the Tenryuji temple and boats you can rent on the river.

This region is especially touristy during the cherry blossoms and when the leaves change colors in fall.

One particulary enjoyable way to travel around the area is by bicycle. You can slowly circulate the old streets and visit at your own pace. You can stop wherever you like and you feel much more connected to the environment surrounding you. I think it simply is magical to bike around such a traditional and breathtakingly beautiful place.

Outside the Bamboo forest is the Tenryu-jo Temple, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. It is 500 yen to get in, and it is open daily from 8:30-17:30.

Opening Hours and Entrance Fees

The bamboo forest is accessible 24 hours and it is free to get in!

However, you should avoid weekends altogether if possible, as it gets terribly crowded. It is best to go in the early morning or in the late evening.

Access

From Tokyo:
-You can take the shinkansen from Tokyo station directly to Kyoto station. From there, you have to take the JR Sagano line to Saga-Arashiyama (15 minutes). From there, it is about a 5 minute walk to Arashiyama.

Address: Arashiyama, Ukyo-ku
